Workstations have a lot to do with an employee's enjoyment of their job as well as their daily productivity. If you put them in the right setups, they can get a lot more achieved then if they're dealing with poorly constructed or designed furniture. This is especially true for employees who are confined to a wheelchair. Wheelchair accessible workstations are specifically designed for these individuals and not only helps them be more productive, it also takes into consideration their physical limits and their ergonomic needs.

A wheelchair accessible workstation will have a desktop that is adjustable in height to suit the needs of the individual. The legs will generally have a sliding mechanism that allows the desk to be lowered or raised to suit the wheelchair user. When the office supply company that you purchase the workstation from comes to install the unit, they will have the end user attend a quick meeting so their chair can be measured. This ensures the workstation is installed correctly and at the right height for the employee. The keyboard tray that comes with a wheelchair accessible workstation should not be the standard pullout tray that comes with most pre-fabricated desks. Ideally you will want a tray that is adjustable and can be moved on an arm attached to the desk itself.

This allows the wheelchair user to position it in any manner they choose, making it comfortable to their needs as well as offering support to their wrists. The portion immediately under the desk should be free of cabinets or wiring so the person in the wheelchair can move around freely without having to worry about running into filing cabinets. The area around the wheelchair accessible workstation should also be free and clear of items so the employee does not have to maneuver their chair through an obstacle course whenever they enter or leave their work area.
