Wheelchair accessible vehicles Motability is a UK program that helps fund purchases or leasing of cars, scooters or powered wheelchairs for those disabled consumers that qualify. Depending on the individual's needs, the government will cover the cost of one of these items with eligibility for periodic replacement, generally once every three years. The most coveted Motability item is a wheelchair accessible vehicle. These modified vehicles allow a wheelchair user to drive himself or herself without the assistance of a caregiver or companion. The accessible vehicle will be equipped with either a retractable loading ramp or lift system, allowing the wheelchair user to enter and exit the vehicle without assistance. The driver seat will be removed and replaced with wheel locks or a clamping system and the foot pedals will be converted to hand controls. Depending on the vehicle, you will have a mileage allowance that covers either three or five years so you will need to ensure you're not exceeding that allowance. Scooters and powered wheelchairs are also expensive items covered by the wheelchair accessible vehicles Motability scheme. There are several models and manufacturers that are covered by the program and allow them to be replaced every three years with a new unit. Wheelchair users are not eligible for scooter and powered vehicles if they have a wheelchair accessible vehicle funded through the program.
There are a number of advisors and third party companies that assist persons in wheelchairs navigate their way through the Motability program and find products and accessible vehicles that are eligible through the program. While you should use caution in using these advisors, there are a number of legitimate dealers that can be quite helpful. Ask for references of people they've assisted in the past and get in contact with them to find out how satisfied they were with the service.
