When you are confined to a wheelchair, some of the easiest and most basic tasks for able-bodied persons can be a real challenge. Using the bathroom can be one of these tasks if a person does not have access to a wheelchair accessible toilet. These toilets have a few features that others do not and give the chair user everything they require to use the bathroom without requiring assistance from others. The first thing a wheelchair accessible toilet will have is ample room around the toilet itself to allow the person in a wheelchair to maneuver their chair into position. Regular bathrooms can be somewhat cramped once you consider the installation of the bathtub, shower, and counters. The size of the bathroom that an accessible toilet is installed in will have to be larger and laid out in such a way that the chair user can not only move themselves easily to the toilet but also turn their chair 360 degrees and transfer themselves from the chair to the toilet. A wheelchair accessible toilet will also have support bars installed around the toilet itself. This allows the chair user to use their upper body to pull themselves out of their wheelchair and maneuver onto the toilet itself. The bars can be mounted to the floor around the toilet as well as in the wall beside it. While a single support bar can be used, it is generally recommended that bars on both sides of the toilet be installed.
One of the newer types of wheelchair accessible toilets that are available to consumers are reversed and include a sink behind the toilet itself. The wheelchair user simply moves to the toilet and transfers themselves onto it facing the wall. When they are finished using the bathroom they can wash their hands before transferring themselves back into their wheelchair. |
