Wheelchair accessible shower trays allow a wheelchair user or disabled person to easily get in and out of a shower area without having to step over a tub enclosure or a low step that was designed to keep the water from flowing into the remainder of the bathroom. The shower tray is generally made of a molded, reinforced fiberglass and can come in a few sizes and configurations depending on the area it is going to be installed in.

The tray is installed on the ground with access to a properly plumbed drain. The tray itself is angled from all corners into the middle of the drain so water reflected off the shower curtain will drop and naturally flow to the drain itself. There is a very small lip around the tub to prevent water from overflowing should the drain be temporarily blocked while the person is showering. The most distinctive feature of a wheelchair accessible shower tray is the slight ramp that allows the wheelchair user to easily go from ground level up over the small water retaining lip. It is made of the same material and generally only extends by approximately 12" to 18" in total. A longer shower curtain is the only other thing required, besides the shower fixtures itself, and should be long enough to touch the water retaining lip of the shower tray.

There are a few different configurations and sizes for wheelchair accessible shower trays including a single entry version, a corner tray for showers installed in a corner as well as right and left entry trays. These should be installed by a qualified contractor to ensure it is properly adhered to the shower unit as well as sealed properly around the edges. Additionally, support and transfer bars should be installed wherever a wheelchair user is going to be using a shower equipped with a tray without assistance from a companion.
