All kinds of buildings now have wheelchair accessible ramps including retail spaces, government buildings and the family residence. These ramps allow wheelchair users to easily access entryways without having to have assistance to get themselves up a series of stairs. This cannot only be a bumpy and embarrassing occurrence, it can also be rather unsafe with risks of being tipped or dropped on the concrete or wooden stairs. The width of the ramp itself is generally at least 36" in width but local legislation may require a ramp to be constructed with a larger width.

The ramp needs to be on a gradual incline allowing a wheelchair user to easily maneuver themselves up a ramp. An incline of 1:16 to 1:20 is preferable and local accessibility legislation will dictate what the minimum and maximum incline of ramp is allowed by law. If the ramp must raise the user up a larger distance, a rest area must be included in the construction. This is especially true if the ramp changes direction in order to help raise the wheelchair user to the level of the entryway.

Rest areas on wheelchair accessible ramps should be at least 36" by 60", allowing the chair user to easily rotate their chair to begin ascending the next portion of the incline. Handrails must be constructed on all wheelchair accessible ramps to both ensure the wheelchair user does not inadvertently navigate themselves off the side of the ramp as well as giving them something to grab onto to assist them in ascending the ramp. Guardrails should be no higher then 28" and must be made of a smooth service that is not prone to flaking or splintering. Metal handrails tend to be the most popular as the offer the safety features required and do not have to potential to give the user slivers as wood does.
