Narrow boats are uniquely designed vessels that have a very distinctive look and length to them. These boats are very narrow in width, hence the name, and were specifically designed to navigate the canals of England and Wales. Originally designed to carry goods, the modern narrow boat is also a great way to travel on the waterways with living and sleeping quarters contained below. While not common, there are wheelchair accessible narrow boats available for purchase, chartering or rental.

A wheelchair accessible narrow boat has some challenges due to the width of it. In most cases the walkways underneath are very narrow and require the use of steps. With an accessible version of this vessel, the floor plan changes to prevent the cramped quarters underneath. A pathway of at least 30" is reserved for travel as well as large spaces for turning the wheelchair itself. Additionally the stairs will either be converted to a gradual ramp or have an easily positioned ramp available. Lifts are fairly uncommon but if there's enough room for installation, this could also be utilized. Getting onboard a wheelchair accessible narrow boat is something that requires modifications to make it happen safely for the wheelchair user. When boarding from a dock or canal, the boat is tied off and a ramp extended from the shore to the boat.

There will be safety railings installed and enough room on the deck must be reserved to allow the wheelchair user to turn their chair 90 degrees and enter the cabin area. If the wheelchair accessible narrow boat has bathroom facilities on board, there has to be enough room to allow the user to transfer themselves from their chair to the toilet in privacy. Support or transfer bars will also be installed to allow the passenger to move themselves safely using their upper bodies.
