Wheelchair accessible mini buses are the preferred mode of transportation for wheelchair users due to the easy access and comfort they provide them during their trips. This style of bus is often operated by cities to assist wheelchair users travel around the city as well as private transportation companies. One of the most recognizable features of a wheelchair accessible mini bus is the loading capability. This style of vehicle has one of two ways of loading a wheelchair user. The first and most popular is a lift system that unfolds out of the bus itself and lowers itself to ground level. The driver or attendant will be properly trained in the operation of the lift system in order to ensure the passenger's safety during the process.

Once the passenger is on the platform, the driver elevates it until the wheelchair is level to the seating are of the bus. The other type of loading system wheelchair accessible mini buses have is a retractable ramp. These can be either initiated manually or via hydraulics once the door has been opened. The ramp is lowered to the ground level so a wheelchair user to maneuver into the seating area. The ramp itself must be on a gradual slant so it can be utilized safely either by the person in the wheelchair or with the assistance of the driver or the passenger's companion.

Once the passenger is loaded, the bus will have to have some sort of locking mechanism to ensure the wheelchair doesn't move or shift during the trip to the passenger's destination. The clamp or wheel lock will be easily engaged and disengaged by either the passenger, driver or an attendant and once engaged will prevent the chair from moving. If the wheelchair accessible mini bus is capable of handling both wheelchair and regular passengers, a portion of the bus will be reserved for wheelchair users.
