The ideal kitchen for a wheelchair user is a bit different then one coveted by able-bodied persons. Wheelchair accessible kitchens require some modifications in order to be fully utilized by a person in a wheelchair. Here are some of the differences you might find between a wheelchair person's kitchen and your own. The first thing you may notice is the layout might be a bit different, especially in a kitchen with limited spacing. A wheelchair needs between 48" and 60" to turn so if there's not enough room, the kitchen space can be difficult to use for a person in a wheelchair. Kitchen islands would be removed or moved to the side and tables would be located in an area that does not inhibit the mobility of the wheelchair. Ideally the countertops and fixtures would be at a lower height then a regular kitchen.

While a wheelchair user could potentially use a regular kitchen facility, their reach and view would be inhibited by the fact that they remain seated in the chair at all times. By lowering the counters and other items such as sinks, they can use them easily and perform everyday tasks without the assistance of others. Overhead cabinets are more likely to be replaced with pullout drawers and counter organizers. Obviously utilizing even lowered cabinets that are mounted above the counters would be difficult without having to shift yourself out of a wheelchair.

As a result designers have come up with ways to effectively store all you need from a seated position. Fixtures such as fridges and stoves may also be specially designed for a wheelchair user. For instance there are numerous ranges available that eliminate the drawer space underneath, effectively lowering the stove by as much as 24" and allowing a wheelchair user to use topside burners safely. Lower side-by-side fridge and freezer units eliminate the need for taller fridges and makes everything easier to grab from a wheelchair.
