While on vacation or sightseeing at a vacation destination, one popular attraction for tourists is helicopter tours of the surrounding areas. This can be a breathtaking experience and allows you to get a birds eye view of all the major attractions and unique buildings in the area. There are some tour operators who have altered their loading facilities as well the seating area to make a wheelchair accessible helicopter that allows them to take chair users on the same tours as able bodied persons.
The biggest challenge for wheelchair accessible helicopters is the actual process of getting a person and their chair into the helicopter.
Depending on the style and manufacturer of the helicopter, the step up from the ground to the seating can be anywhere from 18" to 3 feet. While able-bodied individuals can use stairs or built-in steps, a wheelchair user cannot. In order to accommodate a chair user, a removable ramp can be secured to the helicopter at the time of arrival and departure. This gradual ramp allows the person in the wheelchair and their companion easy access to the seating area. This ramp is stored at the landing facility and brought out when necessary. Another loading possibility is a permanent ramp that is used only when a wheelchair user is taking the tour. The helicopter is wheeled and placed against the ramp so the person in a chair can board. The door for entry on a wheelchair accessible helicopter has to be larger then a standard helicopter's door. Many helicopters used for tours are 2 or 4 seat that uses a swinging door for boarding and unloading. This style of helicopter cannot be used as there needs to be space for the wheelchair to be secured for the duration of the flight. A larger helicopter is used and the doors will either be larger or easily removed to accommodate wheelchair users.
