Wheelchair accessible coaches and transit buses are offered by a large number of cities and private companies for those requiring a wheelchair to get to various parts of the city. Some of these coaches may be dedicated to transferring these travelers around while other large buses will be able to accommodate both wheelchair and regular customers. Entry to these wheelchair accessible coaches is achieved in one of two ways.

The first method of entry involves a lift system. When the driver arrives to pick up the wheelchair users, the doors are opened and a folding lift is lowered. The traveler maneuvers his or her wheelchair onto the lift and secures themselves safely. The lift then rises to the level of the seating area, allowing the person to find an empty spot for the duration of the ride. The second method of entry is a folding ramp system. Much like the lift system for wheelchair accessible coaches, the door opens and a folding ramp system is lowered. These must be a bit longer in length to allow entry from both a ground and curb level.

A coach that utilizes a ramp system will be lower to the ground to reduce the incline or have the ability to lower the vehicle using hydraulics. Once the person is on board, the ramp is extracted and the vehicle returns to its regular height before departing. Wheelchair accessible coaches will also have some sort of mechanism to secure the wheelchair for the duration of the ride. A clamping system that attaches to the wheels is the most common although some utilize straps that the driver or attendant will secure before beginning the journey to their next stop. If the coach services both wheelchair and regular riders, dedicated areas will be reserved for those in wheelchairs rather than having them transfer themselves to a regular seat.
