Vans have long been the most popular forms of transportation for those confined to a wheelchair but there are more companies that are modifying vehicles and offering wheelchair accessible cars and solutions to consumers. One of the components that these wheelchair accessible car conversion kits will all utilize is a ramp system so the driver can easily get in and out of the vehicle. Ideally this ramp system will be on a remote control and activated much like a wireless keylock works with a standard vehicle.

The button is pressed, activating a sequence where the door is opened and a ramp is extended. Depending on the height of the vehicle, a lift may be installed instead of a ramp. The next design feature that wheelchair accessible cars will have is an open space where the driver can maneuver their chair into position and lock it into place. Hatchback vehicles will allow the driver to utilize a ramp system an then wheel themselves the length of the car. If the driver is entering through the driver side door, the regular seat is removed giving the user enough room to enter the vehicle and turn themselves 45 degrees in order to be in proper driving position.

Control features such as the accelerator and braking system will be moved into a spot where the driver can easily access them. The most common spot to place these are on the steering wheel although something can be designed an implemented specifically for the driver's needs. Safety features including a clamping system for the wheelchair and a modified seatbelt system are also considered when converting a vehicle for wheelchair use. By offering wheelchair accessible cars, users can enjoy the freedom of driving themselves around without having to rely on other people for assistance. Companies have converted a number of vehicles from popular manufacturers including the Chrysler PT Cruiser.
