Wheelchair accessible attractions are becoming much more common, especially for those properties that have been constructed recently and subject to local government bylaws and regulations concerning wheelchair accessibility. While this particular concern may not have been on the minds of planners and builders many years ago when construction a facility or attraction, it is now a mandated requirement by law in many municipalities and counties. Making the facility wheelchair accessible via ramps or elevators instead of ramps is much more commonplace then in the past. Using ramps with proper inclines for both motorized and non-motorized wheelchairs allows those with a disability to enter and leave the premises efficiently. While traveling or visiting local tourist attractions, you may note that most have some sort of modification to allow easy access via a wheelchair. Door sizes and entry points for wheelchair accessible attractions are also taken into consideration. While there are no standard door sizes, the width can be as small as 24" while a standard non-motorized wheelchair is 26". Larger powered chairs can run much wider then the standard wheelchair as well. Planners will keep this in mind when constructing a site to ensure that not only will it have adequate ramping but adequate door sizes to accommodate a selection of wheelchairs. Bathrooms at wheelchair accessible attractions will also have to ensure that the various styles of wheelchairs are able to enter and leave without any issues. Larger stalls with transfer bars are commonplace in most modern construction, giving enough room for a wheelchair and carer to accompany the person if necessary. Hand washing stations, paper towel dispensers and air dryers must also be installed in a manner that is easily accessible by someone restricted to a wheelchair. Before planning a trip or night out to a destination you have not attended before, you may want to call ahead to ensure the facility or location is a wheelchair accessible attraction. |
